2018 Wild Wonders!

Connect to our world and our community through a series of engaging hands-on explorations, focused in and about the northern Susitna Valley. Each Wild Wonders! session will explore a different topic, while building relationships through team building and leadership activities and taking advantage of the summertime outdoor classroom.

#1 Little Wild Wonders in Willow
Explore the wonders of the wild in Willow’s backyard through a variety of nature explorations and teambuilding activities. Investigate terrestrial and aquatic environments, and develop outdoor skills. August 6-8 • $100 • entering grade 1, 2, & 3 • 10:00 am – 3:00 pm Mon, Tues, Wed, Fri and 10:00 am – 12:30 pm Thursday • call 733-7111 to inquire about scholarship availability

#2 Wild Wings & Things
Learn about unique characteristics that help birds and other winged things thrive in the subarctic environment. July 23-27 • $185 • entering grade 2 & 3 • 10:00 am – 3:30 pm daily

#3 Wild Wonders in Willow

#4 Wild in Trapper Creek
Ahoy, mateys! Join together with ‘ship shape’ team skills as you build and test a cardboard boat and complete other challenges. • meets at the Trapper Creek Community Center • July 2, 3, 5 & 6 • no cost • lunch provided • entering grade 3, 4, 5, & 6 • 10:00 am – 3:00 pm daily

#5 Watts Happening in the Wild
Learn how plants and animals harness energy, then apply lessons learned to solve human problems during an electrifying week. July 30 – August 3 • $185 • entering grade 4 & 5 • 10:00 am – 3:30 pm daily

#6 Breakout into the Wild
Detectives and sleuths, please apply. Can you crack the codes to unlock secrets hidden inside a treasure box? June 18-22 • $230 • entering grade 5, 6, & 7 • 10:00 am – 3:30 pm daily, with an overnight on Thursday evening (arrive at 10:00 am on Thursday and pick up at 3:30 pm on Friday)

#7 Wild about Outdoor Leadership
Develop your outdoor skills and polish your leadership abilities through a series of hands-on challenges in the great outdoors. June 25-29 • $230 • entering grade 6, 7, & 8 • 10:00 am – 3:30 pm daily, with an overnight on Thursday evening (arrive at 10:00 am on Thursday and pick up at 3:30 pm on Friday)

#8 Soccer Camp
Focus intensively on soccer skills and drills during a multi-day program with coach Jamie Westnedge. Participants supply their own cleats and shin guards. July 23-27 • $125 • entering grade 6, 7, & 8 • 9:00 am – 1:00 pm daily • meets at the Su Valley High School soccer field

#9 Expedition Wild: Kesugi
Learn backcountry camping and wilderness skills, dive deeper into geology, botany, and the ecology of the boreal forest, and gain valuable leadership skills while exploring the Kesugi Ridge area, north of NSI’s Talkeetna campus. Registration Details

Program Details: Programs are held at the Northern Susitna Institute campus in downtown Talkeetna, unless otherwise noted. Walking field trips may occur in town, and Sunshine Transit is occasionally used for off-site field trips. Participants are expected to bring their own lunches unless otherwise noted. Snacks are provided. Group sizes are capped at 12 participants per session, with a minimum ratio of one staff for every six participants.

Registration & Cancellation Policy: Click the blue registration button to begin. Registration is not guaranteed until full payment is received. Cancellations that occur 30 days in advance of the program start date will be refunded the course fee, less a processing fee of $25 per space. For cancellations within 30 days of the program start date, the entire fee will be retained unless we can fill your space. If we cancel a program, your entire fee will be refunded.

Scholarships: We believe all youth deserve the opportunity to participate, regardless of economic status. Several scholarships are available to those who qualify; please inquire.
