2017 Wild Wonders!

Connect to our world and our community through a series of engaging hands-on explorations, focused in and about the northern Susitna Valley. Each Wild Wonders! session will explore a different topic, while building relationships through team building and leadership activities and taking advantage of the summertime outdoor classroom.

#3 Wild Wetlands
Pull on your mud boots and uncover the secret world found below the surface of our rivers, lakes, sloughs, and ponds. June 19-23 • $185 • entering grade 2 & 3 • 10:00 am – 3:30 pm daily • meets at the NSI campus

#5 Put Your Wild Ideas to Work
Put on your inventor’s cap to solve a series of challenges by using found objects, natural objects, and new techniques. June 26-30 • $185 • entering grade 4 & 5 • 10:00 am – 3:30 pm daily • meets at the NSI campus

#6 Creepy, Crawly, and Wild
Explore the tiny world of insects and other bugs, and learn how they help to shape our big world. July 5-7 • $115 • entering grade 1 & 2 • 10:00 am – 3:30 pm daily • meets at the NSI campus

#7 Wild about Outdoor Leadership
Develop your outdoor skills and polish your leadership abilities through a series of hands-on challenges in the great outdoors. July 10-14 • $230 • entering grade 6, 7, & 8 • 10:00 am – 3:30 pm daily with an overnight on Thursday evening (arrive at 10:00 am on Thursday and pick up at 3:30 pm on Friday) • meets at the NSI campus

#8 Soccer Camp
Focus intensively on soccer skills and drills during a multi-day program with coach Jamie Westnedge. Participants supply their own cleats and shin guards. July 17-21 • $125 • entering grade 6, 7, & 8 • 8:30 am – 12:30 pm daily • meets at Susitna Valley High School soccer field

#9 Where the Wild Things Are
Discover the secrets of Alaska’s forest creatures, learning how they survive and thrive in a sub-arctic world. July 17-21 • $185 • entering grade 3 & 4 • 10:00 am – 3:30 pm daily • meets at the NSI campus

#10 Wild about Trapper Creek
Discover the secrets of Alaska’s forest creatures, learning how they survive and thrive in a sub-arctic world. July 24-28 • no cost • lunch provided • entering grade 3, 4, 5, & 6 • 10:00 am – 3:00 pm daily • meets at the Trapper Creek Community Center

#11 At Home in the Wild
Learn how shelter is used by flora and fauna in the natural world, and then test your own shelter skills during an overnight campout. July 31-August 4 • $230 • entering grade 5, 6, & 7 • 10:00 am – 3:30 pm daily, with an overnight on Thursday evening (arrive at 10:00 am on Thursday and pick up at 3:30 pm on Friday) • meets at the NSI campus

Registration Details

Program Details: Programs are held at the Northern Susitna Institute campus in downtown Talkeetna, unless otherwise noted. Walking field trips may occur in town, and Sunshine Transit is occasionally used for off-site field trips. Participants are expected to bring their own lunches unless otherwise noted. Snacks are provided. Group sizes are capped at 12 participants per session, with a minimum ratio of one staff for every six participants.

Registration & Cancellation Policy: Click the blue registration button to begin. Registration is not guaranteed until full payment is received. Cancellations that occur 30 days in advance of the program start date will be refunded the course fee, less a processing fee of $25 per space. For cancellations within 30 days of the program start date, the entire fee will be retained unless we can fill your space. If we cancel a program, your entire fee will be refunded.

Scholarships: We believe all youth deserve the opportunity to participate, regardless of economic status. Several scholarships are available to those who qualify.
