Course Description

Creating a “Quest” is a fun, hands-on way to learn about your community and its place in the world. Students learn about the different types of Quests, and create clues and maps to develop their own original Quest. Creating a Quest incorporates concepts in language arts, science, social studies, visual arts, physical education and career prep. Discover the remarkable stories, culture, and places of Talkeetna and the Northern Susitna Valley while learning an effective, meaningful way to awaken yourself and others to the distinctiveness of your environment and community. Enter the wonderful world of Questing where participants actively investigate and creatively interpret local surroundings through clue-to-clue exploration.

Supplied with a site map and verses (in poem or prose) full of directional and informational clues, Questers connect the pieces of a local story as they move across a given area by foot, bike, boat, or vehicle. At the last stop they find a hidden Quest box containing the Quest stamp (for the Quester’s passport), a sign-in book, and a variety of additional materials pertaining to the Quest topic.

Creating a Quest is the quintessential place-based education experience. Place-Based Education is the process of using the local community and environment as a starting point to teach concepts in language arts, science, math, social studies and other subjects across the curriculum. Emphasizing hands-on, real world learning experiences, this approach to education increases academic achievement, helps develop stronger ties to community, enhances appreciation for the natural world and creates a heightened commitment to serving as active contributing citizens.
