Earthen Plaster Base Coats
Date: Saturday, July 22, 2017
Time: 10:00 am – 5:00 pm
Location: Northern Susitna Institute
Class Fee: $60
Clay base coats provide the functional “skin” of a structure or sculpture. Most modern structures use sheetrock for the interior skin and various exterior sheathing options with a plastic vapor barrier in between to stop any moisture flow. For the long term health of the structure and occupants, a wall system that “breathes” is the natural building approach. The simple ingredients of water, sand, clay, and straw can be mixed into a variety of base coat plasters for different needs of covering many substrates. All natural and non-toxic, this stuff is safe and fun to work.
In this one day workshop we will introduce participants to the basic raw materials, sourcing, and various processing and mixing techniques for different scales of production. Focus will be on learning hands on how to mix and apply a basic earthen plaster base coat onto lathed light straw clay walls as well as samples of straw bale, rammed earth and even some “hybrid” approaches over sheetrock. For those interested, there will be opportunity the next day to continue to practice as we plaster walls in a multi purpose learning space at Northern Susitna Institute. Come join us and start getting comfortable mixing and applying this versatile basic plaster.
